How it works

Rivet is a simple to use, easy to install software which allows you to automatically backup any files you wish. You can then easily retrieve these files from our secure servers.

With Rivet installed on your computer(s), you can create a backup schedule so that the software will:

  • encrypt your data to 448-bit to ensure total privacy, this is almost 4 times the level used by most Internet banks
  • compress it to reduce transfer times whilst maximising the amount we can store for you
  • transfer it over a secure Internet connection to remotely located servers
  • triplicate it for additional security, providing 3 separate backup copies
  • store the 3 copies in 3 geographically independent maximum-security locations

If at any time you need to retrieve a copy of your data, be it a single file or your entire hard drive, simply press the "Restore" button on the Rivet software and watch your information immediately return.

Benefits

We all know that we should be backing up our data, and not just because Government tells us; it's just common sense. But if you still need to be convinced that Rivet is the right software for you, we've summarised some of the key benefits below:

  • Automatic: you can back up your data hourly, daily, weekly or monthly
  • Cost effective: no hardware to install, no media to buy, maintain and store, no man hours spent backing up manually
  • Safe: 3 separate copies of your data are remotely stored in three geographically independent, secure off-site locations
  • Secure: all your data is encrypted to 448 bit and password protected
  • Informative: full "backup logging" as standard plus automatic "backup complete" e-mails sent out
  • Flexible: no limit to the amount of data or file types that you can back up
  • Versatile: you can copy the data on your mobile phone and pda to your computer
  • Invaluable: if you ever get hit by a virus and need to access pre-infected files, just dip into your Rivet archive

Costs

Rivet is free to install, meaning that you only pay for the data storage package that you choose. Remember that as your storage needs grow, you can automatically upgrade to the next storage level and we will send you an invoice for the difference. Although you pay monthly, the minimum contract length is twelve months.

Secure Server Architecture

Rivet store each users data to a minimum of three geographically separate and commercially independant data centres each served by an independent IP provider (providing bandwidth connectivity). This assures that not only is data loss not an option but data integrity, service availability and consistency can be guaranteed even if two data centres are unavailable.

Data Encryption

All data is transferred to our servers using SSL (Secure Sockets Layers), which has been universally accepted on the World Wide Web for authenticated and encrypted communication between clients and servers.

All data stored at Rivet is retained in an encrypted format (448-bit) so that there is no possibility of unauthorized access. All encryption occurs "on the fly" which means that it happens automatically as a file is transferred with no additional input from the user.

Compression

All data transferred to and from Rivet is compressed prior to transmission. Compression is a means of reducing the actual file size so that the amount of data ultimately sent over the network is smaller. This results in faster transfer rates and less time spent on line. Rivet elect to pass on the benefit of compression to their users as it maximises the amount of data that can be stored. Many other remote backup providers do not pass on this benefit to their users, which mean that those users will effectively be paying more money for less storage.

Incremental Backup

The first time data is transferred to Rivet, the entire file or series of files will need to be sent. Thereafter only changed or new files will be transferred, as the system has the intelligence to establish that any files that have not been changed and are already present on our servers do not need to be transferred each time a backup occurs. This substantially reduces the online time required to perform a backup.

Delta Blocking Technology

This process takes the incremental backup one stage further in that only the relevant part of any changed file needs to be transferred to our servers. In this way if only minor changes to a document were made, only this small amount of changed information will need to be uploaded as opposed to the entire file. This again has a large impact on time spent online carrying out backups especially when working with large files such as databases that are routinely updated during the working day.
